Records Of The Year: Axl Rose by Art Brut

Teenage Kicks

The latest Art Brut album, while not quite up to previous offerings, was still a joyous blast of lo-fi indie noise. Eddie Argos continues to perform his vital function in my record collection as the next generation’s Mark E. Smith and this glorious slab of teenage rebellion was the record’s undoubted highlight.

The song begins thus…

“This world is fucked
And you’re an idiot
Why don’t you take a long look
At my middle digit?”

…and goes on to explain that when the world’s got you by the throat and no one understands you (at home or at school)… well, who better to have in your corner than Axl Rose?

“I want to give the world the finger
With the exception of my favourite lead singer.”

Sympathy For The Devil

I can’t help but  feel there’s a certain irony at work here, Eddie. Much as I was a huge Guns ‘n’ Roses fan in my younger days, I’m sure that if I’d ever sought commiseration for my teenage / 20-something angst from the band’s notorious dick* of a lead singer, he’d probably have responded with the two words Eddie uses to wrap this track. And I’d have richly deserved them both.

You Must Be Out Of Your Brilliant Mind

*Allegedly.
