Songs About Teachers: The Headmaster Ritual by The Smiths

School’s Out

It comes as no surprise that Morrissey had a tough time at school. A sensitive, neurotic, poetic, effeminate (?) intellectual… he probably spent much of his time with a “Kick Me!” sign on the back of his blazer. These were obviously formative experiences for the world’s greatest misanthrope. Turns out though that rather than suffering at the hands of his fellow pupils, Mozzer had a much worse time with his teachers.

Games Without Frontiers

Belligerent ghouls run Manchester schools
Spineless swines, demented minds…

…this song begins, and it’s downhill from there…

Midweek on the playing fields
Sir thwacks you on the knees
Knees you in the groin
Elbow in the face
Bruises bigger than dinner plates

No wonder Morrissey wants to go home to his mum. As someone who suffered at the hands of bullying games teachers during my own schooldays, he has my sympathies. Why couldn’t they all be like Bullet Baxter – firm but fair?

‘Cos Bullet Baxter was an ideal. A blueprint of how good teachers could be. The monsters we had at school were human and fallible and knew how to hit without leaving a bruise (and probably failed the medical to get into the police).
