New Music: Inside The Restless Mind of Rollerball Rocko by Luke Haines

Insane In The Brain

Luke Haines is back, returning to the late 70s and early 80s of our childhoods (well, my childhood) that has proved such a rich vein of inspiration to him over the past few years. This time he’s taken his nostalgic obsession to an extreme with a psychedelic concept album about Saturday afternoon wrestling. I kid you not. It’s called ‘Nine And A Half Psychedelic Meditations On British Wrestling Of The 1970s And Early ’80s’ They say there’s a thin line between genius and insanity. Luke Haines takes that line, ties a maggot on the end, and goes fishing.

What’s It All About, Alfie?

Big Daddy.
Giant Haystacks.
Kendo Nagasaki.
Dickie Davies.

If these names bring childhood memories flooding back, then this album is an essential purchase.

Saturday afternoon…
There’s Evil Kenevil
Catweazle’s false teeth
Fly out of the telly
And land at my feet
Mother, what’s for tea?
A liver sausage sandwich and cheese
They’re fighting on the terraces
Starting at 2
There’s a tag-team in the corner
Of our front room
On Saturday afternoon

World Of Sport

The digital album is available to download now. A limited edition CD will be available in November.

  1. Steve says:

Some of those names take me right back to Saturday lunchtimes… just after Tiswas and just before World of Sport. The cusp between great telly and dismal “dad” telly.

  2. How I remember World of Sport and wrestling. A kinder, gentler, more innocent age. Of big men with huge bellies jumping on top of each other whilst wearing masks.
